As is well known, the condition for involute gear meshing is that the base pitch of two gears is equal. If one of the gears in a pair of gears that mesh with each other produces a base pitch deviation, their teeth will undergo an instantaneous change in transmission ratio during the entry or exit of meshing, leading to the generation of shock and vibration.

齒距偏差指的是分度圓上實際齒距和公稱齒距的差,與基節偏差不同的是,基節是沿著嚙合線的方向進行測量,而齒距是在分度圓周節上進行測量。齒形誤差能夠反映出壓力角的誤差。所以,就評斷齒輪傳動的平穩性而言,有些情況能夠用齒距偏差取代基節偏差,齒距偏差更多的是由于機床分度運動機構的短周期誤差引起的。
